Yesterday was Earth Day.  I didn’t do anything different, as I try to be good to the earth everyday.  Earth Day (back then, a week) was a product of the late 60’s, born in 1970, as a political movement to create awareness for environmental issues.  In the 90’s, it heavily promoted recycling and responsible corporate strategies.  Environmentally friendly businesses were supported as hazardous businesses were exposed.  In 2000, Earth Day utilized it’s international infrastructure and the internet to form demonstrations from activists all over the world.  What is Earth Day today?

Earth Day now is individuals and businesses making an attempt to be good to our planet.  Many good things are coming out of the Earth Day awareness, but it’s also becoming a bit like all holidays.  Businesses are capitalizing on it, many in good ways, some not so good.  Businesses that are giving away free trees or vowing to do something in their corporation to make their business more environmentally friendly are doing good.  The ones that bother me are the product makers.   The paradox of Earth Day propaganda printed on buttons and other small plastic things that have a 98% rate of ending up in a landfill makes me sad.

I can celebrate and promote Earth Day all year long without it being printed on something I own.  My statement is made through my habits, using a reusable water bottle or using green bags.

Earth Day is everyday.  Just make some small changes, or even one small change if that’s all you want to do.  It will make a HUGE difference.  Happy Earth Day… or Earth Life.
