My friend was garage sale-ing and ran across an estate sale from a hoarder house, listed on craigslist.  I had to work Saturday and Sunday, but decided to check it out after work on Sunday.  Unfortunately they had closed up shop but I snapped a few photos while making a few observations.

As we drove up, the obvious signs were the furniture pieces in the front yard.  The front door area was cluttered, and after several knocking attempts, I decided to peer into the window.  Yes, we were at the right house, as one of the windows was blocked with a large shelving unit and the other window being a small display of a very large mess.  I’m not sure how people walked around in there to shop for treasures, but I guess if you’re determined enough, you’ll find a way.

Thinking maybe they have something going on in the back of the house, we walked around to the alley of this corner lot home.  The house itself, probably circa 1950’s, was large and looked nice, yet unkempt.  As we got to the back, we realized they were probably done with the sale.  The driveway was completely clear of any junk or trash.

Disappointed, as we drove almost 20 miles to see this, I thought about how many people must go through this is there are indeed 3 million hoarders in the United States.  (statistic provided by the TV show Hoarders)  As we were leaving, the mailbox made me laugh.  Yes, I know, I have a weird, off-beat sense of humor.

Border – hoarder.  It rhymes.  I don’t know why that’s funny, but it just is.

I decided to look up the word “hoarder” on craigslist just to see how many different listings I could find.  I did this search in all 50 states from at least one city.  I found some interesting listings and I’ll share a few with you.  I’ve shortened these a bit, but tried to keep in all the good parts.  Some were really long.  I’ve also highlighted a few interesting things.

HOARDER SEEKS SWAP MEET AND THRIFT STORE OWNERS.

Having a garage sale in my backyard, by appointment only. I have a 32 year accumulation of personally handpicked items. The prices to the public are $1.00, $2.00 and $3.00; with other items ranging over $100.00. THERE ARE NO BURIED TREAUSURES HERE! No furniture, no gold or jewelry. The items are mostly “GUY STUFF”. I know the value of these items, same as you. However I am attempting to offer them to you, at a price where you can make a profit and come back as a repeat customer.
I am offering “YOU’S” an opportunity to cherry pick my estimated inventory of 2,000 pieces [which represents about 20% of all the items needed to be eliminated]. If you like something, you offer me a price, based upon what you think you can sell it for. This eliminates the potential of you having to buy any junk mixed in. FYI, there is no junk, just items you can or can not sell to your customers.

THIS IS NOT A FUND RAISER. I just simply do not understand the value in having such a ridiculous accumulation; causing me to store and periodically to reorganize it. Candidly, despite knowing that I have an item, I seldom can ever really find it in a timely manner.

Predictively the average swamp meeter will have no problem scooping up $500.00 worth of merchandise for their inventories.

you clean, I tutor

I’m a prep school math teacher with a masters degree in theoretical mathematics and another in philosophy. I have a great deal of experience tutoring math, writing, history, science, SATs, and just about everything else. I can provide clearances and references on request.

I’m looking for someone to do cleaning and straightening (and maybe even laundry and that sort of thing) in my Germantown apartment. I’m not going to lie; I’m a real slob, and it’s just too overwhelming for me to keep up with. (I have some hoarder tendencies) So, I propose that we make a trade; you come to clean up for me (ideally while I’m at school, and then I tutor you or your child. Alternatively, I could tutor your child (or children) while you clean. We could also schedule the cleaning and tutoring at different times, and I could come to you for the tutoring (depending where you live).

Ideally, I’m looking for someone to come about once a week, but I’m willing to consider one-time offers also. I’m open to other suggestions as well, including part cash, part trade (but I can’t afford straight cash). I’d also be very open to trading for mechanical or bodywork on my car, and maybe other things as well. However, I rent, so I don’t really have any use for handyman type work. Please do not email looking to trade sex. Yuck!

Collector (hoarder, lol) in search of vintage and newer audio gear

Hello, thanks for reading the ad.  I am a collector mainly looking for 1970’s silver audio gear (Marantz, SAE, Pioneer, Technics, Kenwood, Sansui, Nikko, etc…), but also love black plastic, and tube audio!  I buy single pieces and in bulk. I call myself a collector, my wife calls it “boardline-hoarding”, lol.

If you have anything, I will travel with cash – please shoot me an email with what you got and what you are looking to get for it.

Various Stuff From My Home-Update

I’ve recently discovered that I am a hoarder. My philosophy has been, “someone might need this.” That being said, I have some stuff to get rid of. The following is a list of some of the stuff that’s gotta go:

CRIB AND CLOTHES ARE GONE.
Baby bath tub, car seat still left
Stuffed animals
Elephants (the nick nack kind, not a real one)
Cell phone accessories,
Candle holders. – CANDLES ARE GONE
BOOKS ARE GONE
Plaque like pictures
….other stuff. I’ll add to the list as I think of it
In fact, if you ask me about a specific household item that you’re looking for, I probably have it. I don’t have any furniture….still using that.

PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR PHONE NUMBER TO CONTACT YOU

2 Cats to good home

2 Female cats 3 years old. Angel- white with Blue eyes and Hunter- tabby/white with Green eyes. Both were rescued from a cat hoarder in New Mexico. I am moving and have to find a good home for them to be placed. They are good with kids and can get along with other cats but I don’t know about dogs. Please call if you want to see them or just want them.  My name is Davis and I would be happy to hear from you anytime.

CRAZY GRANNY TOTE SALE #2 over 100 totes FULL-Resalers LOOK

DEALERS ~ RESALERS~ EBAYERS WELCOME!!  This is only the 2nd sale of the year!!

I have to admit, I am a hoarder or Pack Rat, as was my Grandmother, Mother & my Great Aunt. I guess it is genetic.

I have always had a very hard time getting rid of anything that I see as a “Collectible”, or a “Good Deal”, and even selling on eBay it seems like my totes just kept building up . I would say I have well over 300+ totes!! My husband hasn’t seen his workbench for years, or the cat. (ha,ha) . We will have 100 + totes this week FULL of Stuff!

Having 8 grown kids, and 10 grand kids, I have totes and totes full of toys and baby – Toddler clothes! There are totes full of Adult clothes, too  New and Vintage Collectibles and just “Stuff”. Lots of “Stuff”

This is only my 2nd “CRAZY GRANNY TOTE SALE“. My totes are all 18 plastic gallons .

How it works : First of all I am giving you a FREE 18 gallon tote. You can fill it up with anything from any of the totes for only $10!!

IF you are good a packing then you can fit a lot of items in one tote…jeeze if you can fit 100 in ( and I have seen it done) then that’s only 10 cents each !!!Not counting what you would pay for a tote in the stores!  DON’T WANT A TOTE FULL? Thats fine too! We will be selling stuff for only 25 cents, 50 cents, $1 each . Something for every one!!

Serious seller so make us offers… I just need to get everything out of my storage, and as I sell I will be putting out new totes … this is just one of several sells I am planning.

Obsevations

  • 99% of people in America are hoarders on some level.  I am, but I’m trying to change that.
  • Hoarders think highly of their things and they spend a lot of time and effort to communicate that their stuff is NOT junk.
  • According to craigslist, there’s not much hoarding in Hawaii, and the most seems to be in New Jersey.
  • Hoarders seem to place a higher dollar value on their stuff than a thrift store or online marketplace.
  • Hoarding is accepted by society until it gets to a point of unsanitary.
  • Hoarding is an addiction.
  • There are many psychological implications of hoarding.

Our society teaches us to buy everything, in every color and style, then upgrade it with new technology or change it in the next fashion season.  Buy, buy, buy, but where is all the old stuff supposed to go?  For some, we sell it or give it away.  For others, it becomes a hoarding situation.  We have retail places like The Container Store that gives everyone the necessary tools to be an organized hoarder.  Do we really need all this stuff?  I don’t mean just keeping a lot, I mean do we need to keep buying so much?

Surely that shirt will be in style again in a few years.  I might need that extra toaster in case mine breaks.  I like that, but I don’t have a use for it.  If I keep it, maybe I’ll find one.  Where did I put the charger for that remote control toy?  I don’t know, let’s just go buy a new one.  Mom, where’s my shoes?  Honey, where’s the flashlight?  What should I wear today?  Why can’t I find a flat-blade screwdriver?  I should have about 10 of them.  Sound familiar?  We can’t find anything because we have too much stuff.  I like my new minimalist approach.  My house is much more streamlined and I spend less time cleaning, less time looking for things and more time doing what I like to do.  I’m enjoying my home time much more.  I still have hoarding tendencies, but I see more value in not having all the stuff than buying it and keeping it.
